Kenilworth RFC is one of the leading clubs in Warwickshire and, for the last twenty years (bar one in 2012/13), the club has been playing at Levels 5 and 6.
However, the 2016/17 season saw an end to our four year stay at Level 6 when we suffered relegation to now play Level 7 rugby in Midlands 2 West (south). The 2017/18 season saw the club stabilise at Level 7, finishing third in the league behind two very good sides in Droitwich and Malvern.
Despite this encouraging season it is all change on our coaching front and we have appointed former France and New Zealand defence coach David Ellis as Head Coach with immediate effect, completing the club's set up for the 2018/19 campaign. The role will see Ellis work with our ex Colt Will Maisey and George Oram. They will work as Backs’ Coach and Forwards’ Coach respectively, alongside their playing commitments at Coventry Rugby Club. Daniel Careless continues as Strength & Conditioning Coach.
David Ellis is one of the most highly-regarded defence coaches in world rugby, having previously worked with Tonga, New Zealand and most notably France at international level, following an extensive playing career in rugby league. During his 11-year tenure with France, he won the Six Nations on five occasions (including two Grand Slams), helped mastermind France's famous quarter-final victory over the All Blacks at the World Cup in 2007 and reached the final of the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. He also brings a vast amount of professional club rugby experience in both England and France through his coaching roles at Gloucester and London Irish, as well as across the water at Racing, Bordeaux, Castres, Brive and Lyon. David's appointment is an incredibly exciting one for the club, and we would like to offer him a very warm welcome to Kenilworth RFC!
Kenilworth RFC operates an open door policy to new players wishing to get involved, whether it is to push yourself to be the best player you can be or to earn yourself a well deserved pint after the game. Players of all levels are encouraged to come down and see what Kenilworth has to offer.
Training is held on Tuesday & Thursday evenings at 7pm, and all are welcome. These nights are generally for 'serious' players at 1st XV, 2nd XV and Colt level, although this does not exclude keen players from the 3rd XV. Training is either on the main pitch or at the Cow Patch site. There is also touch rugby on a Wednesday evening on the main pitch at 7pm and this is open to all with a good mix of players turning up and playing regularly.
Any prospective new player should simply turn up for training and make themselves known to the 1st XV Team Manager, Adam Turner, the Head Coach, David Ellis or the 1st XV captain, Bobby Thompson. For a more informal chat, feel free to contact our Director of Men’s Rugby, Jai Purewal on 07968 135023 or email@example.com.
