KENILWORTH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Kenilworth Women hosted their league rivals Buckingham Swans at Glasshouse Lane on Sunday in the second of two promising preseason performances, finishing off their summer programme with an inspired 53-5 win against last season’s table-toppers, writes Cath Lyon.
Having finished the 2018/19 season joint top of the Midlands Championship 2 table, the Swans were set to be a challenge for the Women, who were defeated 41-24 by Barnsley in their first warm-up match.
Despite this, 25-player strong Kenilworth quickly put some points on the board with well-worked tries finished by their fantastic back-line talent, including newly capped centres Kiri Bennett and Emma Dootson.
Strength in the scrum and some canny play-making also saw the side’s wingers Phoebe May Howles and Holly Glover over the line, before newbie Sarah Holloway got in on the action with a streaking run that put the home team up 29 points to zero at half time.
Although the newly-worked defence system held strong for the Women, Swans came back shortly after the break to score their first and only try of the game, before a sterling response saw pack members Christie and Rebecca Lewis help take the team to a final score of 53-5.
Captain Rebecca Hill said that although the win provides confidence ahead f the season, there is still plenty for the side to work on: “With several new players and a new coaching team joining us this year, it’s great to see these combinations working and earning us a fantastic win.
“The hard work doesn’t stop there though, this League is highly competitive and we’ve got much more to learn and give, as players and as a whole. It promises to be a very exciting season for us all.”
Kenilworth Women host their first league match on 8th September against West Bridgford at Glasshouse Lane. KO is at 2:30pm.
