KENILWORTH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
A tough preseason paid off for Kenilworth Women this weekend as they bagged their first league win of the season with a comprehensive 41-5 victory over West Bridgford in the opening round, writes Cath Lyon.
The Glasshouse Lane outfit, who entered Championship Midlands 2 last year, hosted the Nottinghamshire-based side at Glasshouse Lane on Sunday and scored seven tries to get their season underway in fine style. The victory comes after last week’s decisive 53-5 pre-season win against Buckingham Swans who topped the league table last season.
Although an early try from the visitors quickly put the home side five points down, Kenilworth soon settled down into a defensive rhythm that would hold out the opposition for the rest of the afternoon.
The first half saw the strength of Kenilworth's pack and the speed and skill of the hosts' backline shine through to put the home side 14-5 up at the break. It was then the resilience of the team's backline that saw new centre Kiri Bennett, fleet-footed winger Phoebe Howles and talented full back Felicity Baldwin end the match with two tries each, three of which were brilliantly converted by centre Emma Dootson.
Following his side's opening round victory, Rich Bennett, Kenilworth Women's head coach, said: “It’s great to see all of the hard work of the pre-season come into it’s own today. It’s clear to see the improvement the team have made in their fitness and skills from last year and great to see that they all enjoyed the day so much.
“The work’s never finished though, each of these players has still got at least 50% to give, which is very exciting for us as coaches.”
