KENILWORTH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Kenilworth Women reached the top of their league table with a convincing victory (26-7) against local rivals Lichfield Greens, writes Cath Lyon.
In what promised to be a tussle of a game at Glasshouse Lane, the Women quickly got the upper hand on the visitors with a try from centre Kiri Bennett, shortly followed by a response from Lichfield’s talented outside centre and a conversion.
Despite this, the strength and discipline in the Women’s defence was what won through, alongside some superb game management from half backs Becky Hill and Sarah Munday and excellent penalty kicking from centre Emma Dootson.
Thanks to the swift feet of Phoebe Howles, the Women had edged the lead at half time, before storming ahead with two try scores for the experienced winger.
Another penalty kick from Emma and a hard worked score in the corner by scrum-half replacement Ffion Davies Cale closed the game at 26-7, putting the Women at the top of their Championship Midlands 2 league table with two point difference ahead of Buckingham Swans, who they’ll face at home next week.
Captain Becky Hill said: “We always knew that Lichfield were going to bring it to us and they didn’t disappoint. They were a pleasure to play against and we’re so proud of our whole team’s performance today.
“Each of our players put in a real shift and now we’re in a great place to face Buckingham Swans next weekend.”
