KENILWORTH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Having ended the first half of the season at number two in the league table, our Women were ready to get their 2020 campaign underway against Lichfield Greens on Sunday, writes Cath Lyon.
Although a spate of cancelled games at the end of last year threatened to break their momentum, our Women didn’t seem to have missed a step, with second row Christie Foster driving over the first try early on.
Not to be outdone by their hard-working forwards, winger Phoebe May Howles and Captain Becky Hill ran in to add 10 more points, with fly-half Sarah Munday successfully converting both.
Lichfield weren’t going down without putting some points on the scorecard though, bringing the half time score to 7-12 and a fantastic score by their number eight shortly after the second kick off, keeping our Women under the cosh for long passages of play.
It was the strength of our Women’s pack that eventually won through however, with prop Aimee Dymock running in try four before number eight Caroline Spence picked up off the base of a five metre scrum and dived over the whitewash in the closing moments, ending the game on 33-14 and a five-try bonus point.
Head Coach Rich Bennett said that this victory was the result of the Women’s hard work over Christmas. He said: “We had a fantastic turnout to our coaching sessions over the festive break and this commitment really showed through in our victory today. Full credit to both sides and the referee for a fantastic game of rugby.
“As ever there are things to work on and we have a big game next week against Buckingham Swans, but we’re more than ready to take on the challenge. Bring it on!”
