Whilst current restrictions may have interrupted pre-season activity on the pitch, off the field the Men’s management team has been busy, making plans behind the scenes for when we can get things under way.

This season will see an all new Men’s coaching team at Kenilworth RFC. As previously reported, George Oram and Will Maisey (Forwards and Backs coaches respectively) left Coventry in pursuit of new challenges in their professional rugby careers, and now we can report that the club has decided to part company with Head Coach David Ellis. Commenting on this latest departure, club Director of Rugby Jai Purewal said,

“Dave, George and Will have done a magnificent job over the past couple of seasons. Any changes to that successful coaching team would therefore need to be carefully considered. Reluctantly, we lost George and Will as a consequence of changes at Coventry Rugby, and now we feel is the right time for a change of Head Coach.

Dave’s arrival effectively woke us up as a club and instilled a drive and confidence not experienced at Glasshouse Lane for some years. His defensive work would prove to be the backbone of the team, giving us the utmost confidence when the opposition had the ball. This rock-solid foundation then allowed George and Will in particular, to build our offensive shape, sometimes with limited personnel options. The coaches brilliantly orchestrated a style of play that delivered a league promotion, the Midlands Intermediate Cup, the RFU National Intermediate Cup and an extremely enviable unbeaten run at home of nearly 2 calendar years. These achievements at 1st XV level were also coupled with a 2nd XV Warwickshire Shield victory and latterly a 2nd XV Warwickshire Cup win.

I remember the process of signing Dave; it seemed unreal, could this really be happening to us? Credit must go to everyone involved at the club; we made it happen and our gamble paid off (and then some!). We also knew that nothing lasts forever and at some point, we would lose Dave. We are now in that position, and all eyes are on who will replace him. For now, though, it’s about taking a moment to recognise what Dave, George and Will have done for the club, encapsulated for me in our biggest and greatest of days. Hairs still stand up on the back of my neck when I remember looking up into the West Stand at Twickenham and seeing thousands of supporters bedecked in blue and gold, cheering on our team. Supporters of all ages, some of whom may never see the like again and those youngsters, the future of our club, who will have been so inspired to be there one day.

To George and Will - thank you, for everything that you’ve done. Dave - you leave us with a fantastic platform to build from, and take our fantastic club forward into the new ground and beyond. Gentlemen, it’s truly been a pleasure and, in the words of Forrest Gump, that’s all I want to say about that.”
