KENILWORTH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Kenilworth Colts secured a comprehensive eight-try, 42-7 victory over on Earlsdon on Saturday, writes Phil Morris.
With the earlier deluge over, a cold wind blew across the club’s Cow Patch but the damp conditions didn’t get in the way of the hosts making a strong start.
Kenilworth came out all guns blazing and just four minutes in, from a lineout, they moved the ball quickly out to the right wing and Geraint Green scored in the corner for an early 5-0 advantage.
The hosts then continued to control the game for the balance of the first half, with Tom Taylor scoring their second from a Kenilworth scrum. Quick hands out to the left hand side of the field saw the ball reach Taylor who doubled his side’s lead.
Despite their early deficit, Earlsdon launched several strong attacks but Kenilworth’s defence proved too strong. Just after the twenty-five minute mark, the hosts won the ball from an Earlsdon lineout and Ben Brown made a long, powerful run to score his side’s third try of the afternoon. Jack Rawlins added the extras to give his side a 17 – 0 half time lead.
The second forty followed a similar pattern to the first, with Kenilworth extending their lead just five minutes after kickoff. Sam Peppitt sprinted forward, producing a sublime step to touch down for Kenilworth’s fourth. With the conversion missed, the score remained at 22-0.
Brown then scored his second ten minutes later for a 27-0 lead. That was followed by a try from Henry Maggs, following great support play from Peppitt, Brown and Charlie Morris, to give the hosts a comfortable 32-point advantage.
Once again, Earlsdon fought on and capitalised on a gap in the Kenilworth defence with their first try twenty minutes from time. The successful conversion made the score 32 – 7 but two further Kenilworth tries from Alex Tompkins and Rawlins followed in the closing minutes of the second half.
The result sees Kenilworth sit in fourth place in the Warwickshire Colts league, three points adrift of third-placed Broadstreet who they take on at The Ivor Preece Field on Saturday.
