Three-try Kenilworth Ladies in Birmingham Moseley defeat
Kenilworth Ladies travelled to Birmingham Moseley on Sunday looking for back-to-back league victories but came away with a 36-17 defeat, writes Aisling Straver.
The sides went into this match following two very different results in the previous round. While Birmingham Moseley suffered a 35-10 defeat to Bletchley, Kenilworth secured an impressive 38-12 victory over local rivals Old Leamingtonians, but it was the hosts who started the brightest at Billesley Common.
A try in the opening two minutes of the match gave the visitors an early lead before a further three tries in the opening 20 minutes extended their lead to 24-0 following the conversion of two touchdowns.
Despite the deficit, Kenilworth did not give up
with second row Christie Foster going over to open her side’s account as the first half came to a close. The conversion was missed as Birmingham Moseley took a 24-5 lead into the break.
With the second half underway, the hosts once again started brightly with a 42nd minute try to extend their advantage. This lead was then extended with 58 minutes played as Kenilworth entered the final 20 minutes 36-5 behind.
With the match entering the final 10 minutes, Kenilworth were determined to add to their first half try and some excellent work from the whole team led to two well-worked, late tries from wing Sophie Henry and centre Maddie Rendell. A single conversion was added to close the gap to 19 points but it was too little too late as Birmingham Moseley secured victory with a final score of 36 - 17 to move up to second in the table.
Kenilworth Ladies are back in action this weekend at home as they take on Norfolk-based side, Wymondham Wasps on Sunday.
