Big Kick-Off for Girls U12 Rugby at Kenilworth RFC

Kenilworth Rugby Club was buzzing with energy and excitement on Wednesday evening (9th April) as it hosted a hugely successful Girls U12 Rugby Taster Session, welcoming new and experienced players to embrace the sport in a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment.

Held under blue skies and glorious spring sunshine, the session brought together a group of enthusiastic Year 6 girls—along with those who will be moving into Year 6 in September—for an introduction to rugby through fun skills-based games and team-building activities.
Led by Philippa Rawbone-Stephens, the club’s experienced coach and a passionate advocate for the women’s and girls’ game, the session gave players the opportunity to meet their new teammates, try out rugby in a relaxed setting, and most importantly, enjoy themselves on the pitch.

The evening ended with a BBQ provided by the club, giving families a chance to chat with coaches, find out more about the club’s plans, and soak up the positive atmosphere.

Coach Philippa described the event as “a brilliant start to something really exciting,” adding: “The girls were incredible—enthusiastic, supportive of each other, and full of energy. It was amazing to see some trying rugby for the first time and immediately embracing it. When I was their age, these kinds of opportunities simply didn’t exist for girls, so to now be part of creating that space for them is incredibly special. With the Women’s World Cup just around the corner and interest in the game growing every week, it’s such a positive time to get involved in rugby.”

The event comes at a time of unprecedented growth in girls’ rugby, with rising participation across the country and greater visibility of the women’s game thanks to events like the Women’s Six Nations and the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Kenilworth RFC is proud to offer a clear pathway for female players, from junior rugby through to its U18 girls' squad and a women’s team competing in the RFU Championship (Level 2).  The club’s goal is to create opportunities for girls of all abilities to learn, grow, and thrive within the sport.

It’s not too late to get involved.  Girls who couldn’t make the taster session are still very welcome to come along and give rugby a try. The team are planning additional sessions during the summer months ahead of the season starting in September.
