More sad news I’m afraid.

Former 1st team captain and all round legend David “Taff “Phillips died peacefully in his sleep at home last Tuesday night. Hooker Taff played 392 games for Kenilworth 1st XV.

PAG Jones says

"At one point he held the world Guinness book of records for the most marathons run (500+)and even when I saw him recently looked incredibly well. A fantastically nice bloke and such a character."

Charlie McGinty, Warwickshire RFU Secretary says

"He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having completed over 500 marathons and raised more than £135,000 for charity. At one point he held the world Guinness book of records for the most marathons run.

Rugby Background: Dave was deeply embedded in the local rugby community and first found his passion for long-distance running during his playing days at Kenilworth RFC.

Running Achievements: Over his decades of running, he completed more than 500 marathons, including running every single London Marathon from 2002 until later in his career.

Charity & MBE: His efforts earned him an MBE in 2020 for his services to charitable fundraising, specifically benefiting the Brain and Spine Foundation.

Community Ties: He was also a celebrated, lifelong fixture at Massey Ferguson RC and in the Claverdon area.

Ced Holbrook says

"Taff & I had largely lost touch over the last 20 years since we both stopped playing Pirates rugby & I, moreover, have latterly been living down South. We tended to meet only sporadically at Pirates/FPA/OW events over that period of time. I do know that his impact on, & input to, KRFC was very significant. He was not only a 1st. team player & captain, but, I think, fulfilled several committee positions – perhaps even Chairman, but I’m not sure of the details. However, I am sure you & your team will have the relevant information & will do full justice to his contribution.

I remember that I joined KRFC as a player in the holidays during the 1959/60 season, turning out for the 4th. team under Vic Chapman. I can’t be certain how soon Taff followed suit, but I know for a fact that he brought my bloody nickname with him, via junior & senior schools. I’ve never been able to shake it off!"
