Kenilworth Men's Senior squad followed their successful trip to Greater Manchester last weekend to play Didsbury Toc H RFC by making the shorter trip to face Worcestershire side Bromsgrove RFC.

This was to prove a sterner test for the squad with Bromsgrove being a seasoned performer in Midlands Premier, one level above Kenilworth. But rise to the challenge they did, with some outstanding performances, including several from the young players making their senior debuts for the club.

The game kicked off and Kenilworth immediately started to take control of possession and territory, opening the scoring in the corner through full back Garrett Bell, following good hands across the back line. Ben Leahy with a superb touchline conversion for 0-7.

The next try was a penalty try awarded for persistent infringements by the Bromsgrove pack, who were under significant pressure on their own line following an initial burst by centre Todd Freemantle. 0-14.

After some excellent defensive work a third try was added by electric winger Ben Harrison, who collected a smart chip kick from the base of a ruck by Renowden on half way, and once gathered there was no way Harrison was going to be caught before the line. 0-21, Leahy conversion

There was still time for one more try before the first third ended, when the Kenilworth pack were able to secure possession close to the Bromsgrove line. Several phases were driven on, before prop forward and recent signing George Walsh powered over the line. 0-28, Leahy conversion.

During the next two thirds of the match Bromsgrove brought on a raft of new players, and their fresh legs and enthusiasm delivered several try’s which put them into a 31-28 lead.

But Kenilworth’s scoring hadn’t finished, and after some tenacious play centre Harry Kaufman collected an off load in the Bromsgrove half and charged for line. He was caught 5 metres short but was able to off load the ball to the supporting Renowden who dotted down in the corner for what turned out to be the evening’s victorious

according to the referee!) and final try. However there is a counter claim from Bromsgrove who believed they had scored one more try - either way it was a fantastic run out for both sides and ideal preparation for the season.

All round an outstanding workout for the squad, who will learn plenty of lessons from facing higher league opposition as they look to enjoy a positive and long overdue return to league rugby in September. #kenfamily
